It’s 1980, and 14-year-old Sylvia Thomas is nervous about starting high school and making new friends. When she finds a diary in her grandmother’s attic, she becomes fascinated with the diary’s author, the bold, flamboyant Tess. As Sylvia reads about Tess and her adventures in 1920s Harlem and 1930s Paris, she gains the courage make new friends. When Sylvia seizes the chance to meet Tess, she risks losing all that Tess inspired her to seek in the first place.
